Visiting Amsterdam can be a bit overwhelming. With its ring of canals, it can be a bit confusing to figure out where to stay in Amsterdam. You don’t want to walk up to your hotel only to find that it’s smack in the middle of the Red Light district.
While Amsterdam can feel big and confusing on the map, it’s actually pretty small. Public transportation in Amsterdam is also very good and very affordable, which makes it easy to get around no matter where you stay.
I usually recommend looking for someplace fairly central, going as far south as De Pijp purely for the ease of getting to things. Within this area you can definitely find a place to stay to suit your needs. From quaint Airbnb’s to big glamorous hotels, Amsterdam has it all.

Amsterdam Centrum
Centrum is by far the easiest in terms of getting to and from most of the things you’ll want to do in Amsterdam. For first-timers looking to see all the main Amsterdam sights, I always recommend finding something within the canal ring. Nothing beats the views of the canal houses, and a stroll along the canals with coffee in hand is one of my favorite activities.

Jordaan
You won’t find many hotels in Jordaan, since this is an area full of tight streets where most locals and expats live. Jordaan is one of the prettiest areas of Amsterdam and boasts some amazing restaurants. Jordaan still provides great access to all the things in Amsterdam, although it’s best for those who are open to walking to public transport. Consider staying at the gorgeous boutique hotel, Morgan & Mees or booking an Airbnb in this area.

Vondelpark/Museumkwartier
Alright, so the area I’m thinking of really encompasses Museumplein, Oud Zuid, and the area around Vondelpark. Vondelpark is the Central Park of Amsterdam and a very lovely neighborhood. Fewer hotels are located here, but if you find an Airbnb it’s lovely. If you’re really planning to hit up all the museums, this area is definitely the closest.

De Pijp
Jon and I lived in this area for the first three years of our time in Amsterdam, so it’s close to our heart. The north-south metro here makes it super easy to get around the city. It takes about 6 minutes to get right into the city center. Albert Cuypmarkt is located here, and there are tons of great local bars and restaurants.

Oost
The eastern part of the city has more on an industrial and working-class heritage. The further east you stay, the harder it’ll be to get to everything in the city center. Oosterpark or the area around Artis are very beautiful.

Noord
Amsterdam Noord is just a quick ferry ride from Centraal Station, and the ferry is totally free! It’s a great option if you’re looking to be close to the city but not too close. You’ll be able to be in the heart of everything within 5 minutes!
