5 Winter Coats You Should Have in Your Closet

Over the past two years of living in the Netherlands, I’ve learned a thing or two about the best winter coats. While I love a stylish statement coat, the reality is you should also have something practical in your arsenal. A red wool stunner isn’t going to help you when it’s freezing AND raining. Which is pretty much the case 70% of the year in Amsterdam.

So today I want to share the 5 winter coats you should have in your closet. Whether you’re looking for something seriously warm or more interested in the chicest option, you’ll find them all below.

A few things to remember when building out your coat wardrobe:

What kind of weather am I going to primarily be dealing with? (and be realistic!)
Do I need a hood or will I carry an umbrella?
How warm do I need to be?
Do I have room for statement options or will I get more use out of something practical?

The seriously warm coat – If you’re looking for the warmest and most practical coat, this is IT. I got this coat last year and have to say it’s my favorite when it comes to seriously bitter days. The longer length keeps you legs warm and the hood is detachable. One of my favorite things is that this coat still has a flattering silhouette so you don’t look like the Michelin Man.
The coat you’ll have for years – I bought this coat from J. Crew some six or so years ago. And it’s still one that makes a regular appearance in my winter wardrobe. It can be a little basic, but there’s a reason every girl in NYC owns one. It’s chic but warm and easy for layering underneath. I’d recommend going with a camel or grey color. I’ve found the black tends to pick up a lot of fuzz and lint. Runs true to size.
The statement coat – This category is by and far my downfall. I’ve got more than a few statement coats in my closet. I usually like to look for these on sale around January or February. Most people put their money towards basic coats, so you’re likely to find a stunner hiding on the sale rack. I love to keep an eye on the J.Crew and Banana Republic sale sections for stunners like this one. Just make sure whatever you buy is something that will go with at least and handful of things in your wardrobe. You don’t want to buy statement coat you can never wear.
The teddy coat – Here’s the thing with teddy coats – they can seriously range in terms of warmth. I found one last year at Gap that is actually almost as warm as option one on this list. But I also have a long one that’s better suited for 45-50 degree days. Teddy coats have been seriously popular for the past few years, so it’s a great option if you want to be more on trend. Just make sure to check how heavy it is. (Note: I haven’t personally tried this one, but it looks similar to my Gap favorite)
The cute and cropped jacket – A cropped jacket is just what you need to round out your winter coats. Whether a puffer, teddy or velvet option, a cropped jacket is perfect for when you want to show off your high waist jeans. I’ve had my eye on this bomber one for a while. I’d add it to my collection, but I don’t think I can fit any more coats in my closet.
